Older People That Chose Not To Have Kids Reveal If They Regret The Decision Now

show that a record percentage of women don’t have kids. Recently, reddit user #2 Amy Blackstone, a gender sociologist at the University of Maine who specializes in childfree research, hopes that her work at least helps question the assumption that little boys and girls will grow up to become parents. “Right now, girls in particular, but girls and boys both, are raised to imagine themselves as parents of children,” she told Huff Post. “But if we more critically thought about the question of whether or not to parent, then everyone would have the opportunity to make the choice that’s right for them.” “Of course, the childfree would benefit… if we made it a choice rather than an assumption,” Blackstone said. …

Helm told the Lousville Courier-Journal in an interview on Wednesday that she had no regrets. What leading HealthTech VCs are investing in

Why is tech still aiming for the healthcare industry? It seems full of endless regulatory hurdles or stories of misguided founders with no knowledge of the space, running headlong into it, only to fall on their faces. Theranos is a prime example of a founder with zero health background or understanding of the industry — and just look what happened there! The company folded not long after founder Elizabeth Holmes came under criminal investigation and was barred from operating in her own labs for carelessly handling sensitive health data and test results. But sometimes tech figures it out. It took years for 23andMe to breakthrough FDA regulations — it’s since more than tripled its business and moved into drug discovery. …

July 2019 Looks Set To Be The Hottest Month On Record (But Probably Not For Long)

Preliminary data shows July 2019 equaled or surpassed the hottest month on record – July 2016. This follows the hottest June on record, which saw average temperatures soar 2°C (3.6ºF) above normal. These figures were collected by the World Meteorological Organization and the Copernicus Climate Change program and are based on the first 29 days of July. The data reveals temperatures in July 2019 were on par with – or “marginally warmer” than – July 2016, which is not only the warmest July on record but the warmest month. But there is one big, crucial difference between July 2016 and July 2019. The former was in the middle of one of the strongest occurrences of the El Niño phenomenon – a climatic event that contributes to heightened global temperatures. July 2019 was …

Greg Zanis prepares crosses to place at a makeshift memorial for victims of a mass shooting at a shopping complex Monday in El Paso, Texas. (AP Photo/John Locher) “He has told the country that we are people to be feared, people to be hated,” Escobar continued. “From my perspective, he is not welcome here. He should not come here while we are in mourning.” And Democratic presidential candidate Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, urged Margo in a televised interview to “quietly” tell Trump that he is not “welcome” in the city, because of his rhetoric on immigration. Ryan has escalated his language in the last 24 hours, as he struggles to raise his political profile. He tweeted “Fck me” after Trump mistakenly, at one …

Reports like these aren't uncommon, but they're usually published by analyst firms who conduct research by talking to companies. I’ve lived the difference between US and UK health care. Here’s what I learned

(CNN)Earlier this year, I shattered my elbow in a freak fall, requiring surgery, plates and screws. While I am a US citizen, several years ago I married an Englishman and became a UK resident, entitled to coverage on the British National Health Service. My NHS surgeon was able to schedule me in for the three-hour surgery less than two weeks after my fall, and my physical therapist saw me weekly after the bone was healed to work on my flexion and extension. Both surgery and rehab were free at the point of use, and the only paperwork I completed was my pre-operative release forms. With debate raging in the US among Democrats about whether to push for a government health …

There May Be Fewer Than 19 Vaquitas Left In The Wild

The vaquita has the unenviable distinction of being the rarest marine animal on the planet – and a new study estimates there could be fewer than 19 of the elusive porpoises left. Scientists have been tracking vaquita activity since 2011 to estimate population numbers, using sightings and clicks to make their calculations. Because the cetaceans use clicks to echolocate and communicate on an almost constant basis, the number of clicks collected by the team’s underwater sensors over a 62-day period (June 19 to August 19) can be used to work out year-on-year fluctuations in population numbers. According to the study, published today in Royal Society Open Science, the average number of clicks detected each day fell by 62.3 percent from 2016 to 2017 and a further …
