Couple In Mongolia Die Of Plague After Eating Raw Rodent Innards For “Health Benefits”

Misinformation can kill you, literally. Sadly that is what has happened to a Kazakh couple in Mongolia who died from the plague after eating raw rodent meat, which they believed to have “health benefits”. The town of Tsagaannuur, near the border between Mongolia and Russia, was quarantined for six days last week after the man and woman were diagnosed posthumously with plague, a World Health Organization (WHO) official told the Washington Post. After eating the uncooked innards of an infected marmot (a type of large squirrel), including the kidney, gall bladder, and stomach, they both succumbed to multiple organ failure within a week.   According to Ariuntuya Ochirpurev of the WHO, the man came down with a fever first, after …

How to make a friend of your anger

There is no quick fix to anger issues, but working through them can be a journey that sheds light on who we are and how we perceive the world Its easy to feel hijacked by our anger. After all, anger was one of the primary evolutionary feelings: it was designed for survival. It knows only on and off. But this means that once the trigger is pressed, often by a trivial event, we end up in noise and miss out on the detail and complexity of our humanity. Our capacity for empathy is reduced and we want only to survive, hide, hurt, blame or punish. Many people come to me expecting a quick fix or a solution to their anger. …

Human Actions Are Putting The Survival Of A Million Species On The Line

The United Nations (UN) released the much-anticipated IPBES Global Assessment on Monday, exposing the dire state of global biodiversity in 2019. Close to a million species of plants and animals are at risk of extinction within the coming decades unless we see “transformative change”, the report’s authors warn. And human activity is almost entirely to blame.  The findings echo suggestions of the sixth mass extinction, which some say we are already witnessing. Unlike past extinctions, triggered by extraordinary circumstances, whether volcanic climate change or extraterrestrial objects, this is a disaster directed by us. The key “drivers” of extinction listed in the report are, in descending order: 1. Changes in land and sea use 2. Direct exploitation of organisms 3. Climate change 4. Pollution 5. Invasive alien …

What’s behind the absurd gamble on women’s rights and health

(CNN)Last week, Georgia joined the ranks of states in a sudden rush to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks after conception — before a woman may even know that she is pregnant. Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio passed similar laws this year. Alabama is taking its fight against choice even further, with a bill that not only bans abortions but makes it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion. The Supreme Court, first in Roe v. Wade in 1973, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1992, and yet again in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt in 2016, has made it clear that placing an undue burden on a woman’s right to choose …

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Signs Heartbeat Abortion Bill Over Celebrity Protests

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a controversial abortion bill Tuesday that bans abortion as early as six weeks, over protests from reproductive rights groups and Hollywood stars. The so-called Georgia legislation is the fourth such law to be passed this year, but heartbeat measures in Ohio, Mississippi, and Kentucky were all blocked by legal challenges before they could be enacted. Both the ACLU and Center for Reproductive Rights said Tuesday that they will sue to block the law in Georgia as well. Governor Kemp put politics before the health and well-being of Georgia women and their families, Talcott Camp, deputy director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, said in a statement. 50 Brilliant Child Hacks For Babysitters, Parents, Teachers, And Nurses

By Dakota Corbin Listen up, because Ask Reddit has some hacks for anyone who spends time around little kids. By Dakota Corbin 1. If a child is having a meltdown, ask what color their shoes/shirts/pants/whatever clothing their wearing are. This distracts the child long enough to stop them in the midst of their meltdown because they haven’t thought about what they’re wearing. 2. To get a newborn to burp: Sit them on your knee, holding them under their armpits, and move their upper bodies in a circle several times. Like a reverse hula move I guess. I learned it from a neonatal nurse, and it’s almost infallible. So much faster and more reliable than regular burping. 3. If you want …
