What an unimaginable tragedy…
During a music festival this weekend in Las Berlanas, Spain, 30-year-old pop star Joana Sainz Garcia (pictured above) was performing on stage when an exploding firework struck her on accident in the middle of the concert. She was knocked unconscious at the time, and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to local reporting from the area in El Diario Montañés, the young singer was on stage performing with the Super Hollywood Orchestra on the final night of the four-day festival when she was apparently struck by a cartridge from a pyrotechnic device that was going off during the show.
After being knocked unconscious by the device, Garcia was helped by several of the more than one thousand festival-goers, and eventually transported to a hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries suffered in the freak accident. She was just 30 years old.
Her agency, Prones 1SL Agency, relayed more about her death in their official announcement about it on Facebook, translated here (below):
“[On behalf of] Prones 1SL agency, that represents the Super Hollywood Orchestra, and all our staff, musicians, assembly, and artists, in general, [we] express our most heartfelt condolences to the family, partner, and friends for the loss of our colleague Joana. She always showed exemplary behavior, both personal and artistic, in addition to a great human quality. It’s going to be very difficult for all of us to overcome her absence. We will always remember you, Joana. R.I.P.”
So, so sad.
And in a separate social media statement released by the local town council of Las Berlanas, the city government also expressed their condolences about what had gone on and the tragedy that occurred at the end of their festival (below):
“From the Municipal Corporation of Las Berlanas and as representatives of the whole town, we want to extend our condolences to the relatives of Joanna, the girl from the Super Hollywood group who died yesterday in our town, as well as to all her groupmates. We also want to thank… all visitors for their good behavior in those difficult times. Thank you very much DEP Johana Sainz. You are in our memory.”
Such a tragedy — she was so young.
According to a concert promoter who worked with the festival for years, they had apparently “been doing the same act for five years,” and nobody could understand why the firework went off wrong and killed Garcia. An investigation is ongoing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Joana’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult and unimaginable time.
